Hundreds of concentration and internment camps were set up in France in 1937 to imprison those considered the enemies of the country: Spanish Republicans, gypsies, Jews, those fleeing Nazism. All memory of them has vanished.
I once lived 25 kilometres from the concentration camp of Dachau. In this series, I juxtaposed photos taken by the Nazis with photos of the camp today. Dachau, open to the public, has become a tourist destination.
A friend discovered glass plates of battle scenes of the First World War in his great uncle’s attic. On each plate was written the exact area where the photo was taken. I revisited these same battle fields nd photographed them.
Of couse, there is no longer any memory of the tragedy and horror that once took place there.
